אֶלְעָזָר
Elazar
Proper noun
Eleazar (God has helped)

Definition

The Hebrew proper name Elazar (אֶלְעָזָר) means 'God has helped' or 'God is my helper,' composed of El (H410, God) and azar (H5826, to help). It is the name of Aaron's third son and successor as high priest, among others.

Usage & Theological Significance

Eleazar son of Aaron is one of Scripture's most important priestly figures. After the deaths of Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10), Eleazar and Ithamar inherited the high priestly duties. Eleazar succeeded Aaron (Numbers 20:26-28) and served through the wilderness, the conquest, and into the period of settlement. His role in the distribution of the land (Joshua 14) links the priestly ministry with God's fulfillment of covenant promises. His name — 'God has helped' — becomes a theological summary of Israel's entire wilderness journey.
