גָשׁוֹק
ashowq
Adjective
Oppressor, extortioner

Definition

From H6231 (ashaq). One who oppresses, defrauds, or extorts. Appears in prophetic denunciations of social injustice.

Usage & Theological Significance

Ashowq names God's grievance against Israel: exploitation of the vulnerable. The prophets thundered against oppressors. Biblical justice is concrete, economic, and personal. God identifies with the oppressed (Psalm 12:5) and will judge the oppressor. No worship is acceptable while oppression continues.
