פֶּלֶא
pele
Noun, masculine
wonder, marvel, miracle, extraordinary thing

Definition

Something so extraordinary it elicits awe and amazement — beyond natural explanation. Pele describes the miraculous deeds of God that shatter normal expectation. The verb form means to be beyond one's power to accomplish or comprehend. It is the word used for the Messiah's title in Isaiah 9:6.

Usage & Theological Significance

Isaiah 9:6's 'Wonderful (Pele) Counselor' declares the Messiah to be himself a wonder — not just someone who does wonders but one whose very person is miraculous. The Psalms celebrate God's niflaot (wonders) as the basis for praise: tell of his wonders among the nations (Ps 96:3). These wonders — exodus, creation, resurrection — are the acts that define who God is and why he deserves worship.

Key Bible Verses

Isaiah 9:6 His name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.
Psalm 77:14 Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
Psalm 139:14 I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
