פָּנִים
Panim
Noun (plural)
Face, Presence, Before

Definition

The Hebrew noun panim (פָּנִים) is always plural in form and means face, countenance, or presence. It appears over 2,100 times — one of the most frequent nouns in Scripture. The phrase pene YHWH (the face of the LORD) carries the fullest theological weight.

Usage & Theological Significance

To seek God's panim is the ultimate goal of the worshipper (Psalm 27:8). To experience His panim shining is the greatest blessing (Numbers 6:25). To be sent away from His panim is the deepest curse. The New Testament declares that "the glory of God" is seen "in the face of Jesus Christ" (2 Corinthians 4:6) — the ultimate fulfillment of panim theology.
