qalon
Noun, Masculine
Shame, dishonor, disgrace, ignominy

Definition

From H7034 (qalah, to be lightly esteemed). The opposite of kabod (glory/weight). While glory is weightiness and substance, qalon is lightness, emptiness, and worthlessness. It describes the state of being stripped of dignity and exposed to public contempt.

Usage & Theological Significance

The honor-shame dynamic is central to biblical theology, and qalon sits at one pole. Proverbs repeatedly warns that fools inherit qalon (Prov 3:35), while the wise are crowned with honor. Habakkuk 2:16 pronounces qalon upon Babylon β€” 'thou art filled with shame for glory.' The deepest theological expression: Christ endured ultimate qalon on the cross β€” public nakedness, mockery, the shame of crucifixion β€” to clothe His people in kabod (glory). 'Who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame' (Heb 12:2).
