אַרְגֹּב
ʾArgov
Proper noun
Argob

Definition

The name Argob means 'heap of stones' or 'stony region,' designating both a region in Bashan (a fortified area with 60 great cities) and a personal name. As a region, Argob was under the rule of Og, the giant king of Bashan, before Israel's conquest.

Usage & Theological Significance

The conquest of Argob stands as one of Israel's greatest military victories under Moses' leadership. Og of Bashan — whose iron bedstead measured thirteen and a half feet (Deuteronomy 3:11) — seemed unconquerable. Yet God said to Moses, 'Do not fear him' (Deuteronomy 3:2). The victory over Argob became a rallying testimony throughout Scripture, reminding Israel that God delivers His people from even the most formidable opposition.
