תִּפְאֶרֶת
Tipharet
Noun, feminine
Beauty / Splendor / Glory

Definition

A Hebrew noun meaning beauty, glory, splendor, adornment, or honor. From paar (H6286), to glorify or adorn. Used for God's glory, for priestly garments, for Israel's honor among nations, and for wisdom's crown.

Usage & Theological Significance

Tipharet is the beauty that belongs to the LORD alone and that He graciously shares with His people. Isaiah 62:3 promises that Israel will be "a crown of tipharet in the LORD's hand" — transformed from shame to splendor. The high priestly garments were made "for glory and for beauty" (tipharet, Exodus 28:2), modeling the reality that God's servants are clothed in divine splendor. Ezekiel uses the same word to describe Jerusalem's unfaithfulness: she was adorned with God's beauty and used it for prostitution (Ezekiel 16:14-15). All beauty is ultimately gift, not possession — it demands grateful stewardship.
