Bavvai
Proper noun, masculine
in my longing; a builder of Jerusalem's wall

Definition

Bavvai son of Henadad, ruler of half of Keilah, worked on a section of Jerusalem's wall under Nehemiah's leadership (Nehemiah 3:18). He represents the countless faithful laborers whose names are preserved in Scripture though history has forgotten their deeds. The name may mean 'in my longing' or 'wishing' — a fitting description for an exile who longed to rebuild the Holy City.

Usage & Theological Significance

Bavvai's brief mention in Nehemiah models devoted service without recognition. God preserves even the names of ordinary wall-builders. The church is built by such people — faithful, unheralded, each assigned a section. Paul echoes this in 1 Corinthians 3:14: each man's work will be tested. Those who build faithfully will receive a reward. No service offered to God disappears unnoticed.
