אֶגְלַיִם
Eglayim
Proper noun, place
Eglaim (place in Moab)

Definition

Eglayim is a place in Moab mentioned in Isaiah 15:8, in the oracle against Moab. Its name may mean "two ponds" or "twin watering places." The wailing for Moab's destruction would reach its borders.

Usage & Theological Significance

The oracle against Moab (Isaiah 15–16) is one of the most emotionally moving judgment prophecies in Scripture. God's own heart is said to moan for Moab (Isaiah 16:11). The mention of Eglaim marks the geographic extent of mourning — from the southernmost to the northernmost points. This reminds us that God's judgment is not cold or impersonal; He grieves over the destruction of nations. His justice and His compassion are not contradictory.
