H998 · Hebrew · Old Testament
בִּינָה
Binah
Noun, feminine
Understanding / Discernment

Definition

The Hebrew word binah comes from the root bin (H995), meaning to distinguish, discern, or perceive. It describes a quality of mind that can separate truth from falsehood, good from evil, and wisdom from folly. Binah is more than factual knowledge — it is the penetrating insight that applies knowledge rightly. It appears throughout Proverbs and the wisdom literature as one of the highest gifts God can bestow on a person.

Usage & Theological Significance

Binah is closely linked with chokhmah (H2451, wisdom) and da'at (H1847, knowledge) as the three pillars of the wise life (Proverbs 2:6). God is said to have founded the earth by wisdom and established the heavens by understanding (Proverbs 3:19). The fear of the LORD is the beginning of binah (Proverbs 9:10). Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would have the Spirit of understanding upon Him (Isaiah 11:2). Paul's prayer for believers echoes this: that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding (Colossians 1:9).
