2 John
JON
Bible book
A brief postcard-length epistle from the apostle John to 'the elect lady and her children,' warning against itinerant deceivers (c. AD 85-95).

📖 Biblical Definition

The apostle John's brief epistle to the elect lady and her children (v. 1) — thirteen verses, the shortest book in the NT after 3 John. The elect lady may be a specific Christian woman host of a house-church or, more likely, a particular local church personified as a lady (the church as Bride being a common NT image). The letter rejoices that John has found some of her children walking in truth (v. 4), commands the central Christian duties of mutual love and continuing in the apostolic doctrine, and issues a sharp warning against false teachers who deny the incarnation: For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist (v. 7). Verse 10 instructs the church to refuse hospitality to such teachers: If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed. The brief letter balances love and discernment: love within the truth, refusal of hospitality outside it. The two do not contradict.

2 JOHN, n. The shortest of John's epistles, written to a Christian matron and her household, joining truth and love as inseparable, and forbidding the reception or salutation of any teacher who comes not bringing the doctrine of Christ — lest the host become partaker of his evil deeds.

📖 Key Scripture

2 John 4"I rejoiced greatly that I have found some of your children walking in truth."

2 John 6"This is love, that we walk according to His commandments."

2 John 7"For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh."

2 John 10"If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into your house."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Boundaries reframed as bigotry; doctrinal hospitality treated as a vice.

2 John says do not even greet a false teacher. The modern church says we must platform every voice in the name of love. John would say that is not love — it is partnership in evil deeds. Love and truth are not rivals; they are twins.

The elect lady was a real woman protecting a real household. The application has not changed: guard your home, your table, and your pulpit. Some doors should not open. Some teachers should be sent away with no Sunday afternoon tea.
