Abner son of Ner was the cousin of King Saul and the commander of his armies — the chief military strategist of the house of Saul. After Saul’s death at Mount Gilboa, Abner set up Saul’s surviving son Ish-bosheth as a rival king to David, ruling the northern tribes from Mahanaim (2 Samuel 2:8-10). A two-year civil war followed. Eventually Abner defected to David, bringing the northern tribes with him (2 Samuel 3:6-21) — only to be murdered at Hebron by Joab in private revenge for Joab’s brother Asahel, whom Abner had killed in self-defense at the pool of Gibeon. David lamented Abner publicly: "Died Abner as a fool dieth?" (2 Samuel 3:33). Joab’s blood-feud cost the kingdom a uniter.
Abner — captain of Saul's host; murdered by Joab after defecting to David.
Abner held the northern tribes for Saul's house after Saul's death until insulted by Ish-bosheth. He then negotiated the transfer of all Israel to David. Joab, suspicious and grieving Asahel, called Abner aside in the gate of Hebron and stabbed him under guise of a private word. David lamented him publicly: 'Died Abner as a fool dieth?'
2 Samuel 2:8 — "But Abner the son of Ner... took Ishbosheth the son of Saul."
2 Samuel 3:12 — "And Abner sent messengers to David... saying, Make thy league with me."
2 Samuel 3:27 — "Joab took him aside in the gate... and smote him there under the fifth rib."
2 Samuel 3:33 — "Died Abner as a fool dieth?"
Treated as minor figure; the betrayal under cover of friendship is missed.
Abner's death is one of Scripture's sharpest illustrations of treachery. Joab took him aside 'quietly' in the gate — the place of justice — and stabbed him under cover of a private word.
David's public lament shows that great men can fall to small ambushes, and that the hand that smiles at the gate may carry the dagger.
Hebrew 'Avner — 'father of light.'
"Died Abner as a fool dieth? — great men fall to small ambushes."
"The gate of justice became the place of murder; do not trust every quiet word."
"Abner crossed the line; Joab held the grudge; the kingdom paid the bill."
