Ish-Bosheth
ISH-BOH-sheth
proper noun
Hebrew Ish-Bosheth (אִישׁ־בֹּשֶׁת) — "man of shame." Saul's surviving son; rival king to David.

📖 Biblical Definition

Ish-bosheth ("man of shame," likely an editorial substitution for his original name Eshbaal, "man of Baal") was Saul’s youngest son, set up as rival king of Israel by Saul’s general Abner after Saul’s death at Mount Gilboa (2 Samuel 2-4). He reigned from Mahanaim east of the Jordan for two years over eleven tribes, while David reigned over Judah from Hebron. He was a weak figurehead under Abner’s real control. After Abner’s defection to David and subsequent murder by Joab, Ish-bosheth was murdered in his own bed by two of his own captains during his midday rest (2 Samuel 4:5-7). The two murderers were executed by David. Saul’s house ended in shame; David’s in covenant.

Saul's youngest son, set up by Saul's general Abner as rival king of the northern tribes after Saul's death on Mount Gilboa (2 Sam 2:8-10). Reigned from Mahanaim east of the Jordan for two years while David reigned in Hebron over Judah. Weak ruler dependent on Abner; lost Abner through a quarrel; after Abner's defection and Joab's murder of Abner, was assassinated in bed by his own captains Rechab and Baanah, who brought his head to David expecting reward — David executed them. Ish-Bosheth's name was originally Esh-Baal; rendered Ish-Bosheth ("man of shame") by later editors who replaced Baal-references.

📖 Key Scripture

2 Samuel 2:8-10"But Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul's host, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; And made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites... Ishbosheth Saul's son was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and reigned two years."

2 Samuel 4:7"For when they came into the house, he lay on his bed in his bedchamber, and they smote him, and slew him, and beheaded him."

2 Samuel 4:11-12"How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed? shall I not therefore now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth? And David commanded his young men, and they slew them."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Largely forgotten; the brief two-year rival kingship is a study in weak rule and the cost of dynastic transition.

Ish-Bosheth's reign shows what happens when a kingdom continues by inertia after its rightful succession has shifted. Two years of war, betrayal, and assassination — until David was made king over all Israel.

Recover the lesson: legitimate authority eventually consolidates; resistance prolongs suffering. Ish-Bosheth's people would have been served better by an earlier acceptance of David.
