An artisan is a practitioner of a trained, skilled trade — the carpenter, mason, smith, weaver, embroiderer. Scripture honors them by name. Bezalel and Aholiab, filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all manner of workmanship, oversaw the tabernacle construction (Exodus 31:1-11; 35:30-35). Hiram of Tyre, a worker in bronze full of wisdom and understanding, cast the temple’s pillars (1 Kings 7:13-14). Christ Himself was a tektōn — a carpenter or builder — of Nazareth (Mark 6:3). Paul the apostle was a tentmaker (Acts 18:3). The kingdom of God uses artisans; the church should not be ashamed of them or treat their trades as second-tier vocations beneath knowledge-workers. Skilled hands are sanctified hands.
One who professes and practices an art in which manual skill is required; a handicraftsman; a mechanic.
ARTISAN, n. One who professes and practices some art in which manual labor is requisite, as a painter, sculptor, carpenter, or weaver; a handicraftsman.
1 Kings 7:13-14 names Hiram of Tyre as filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning to work all works in brass. The temple was built with named artisans; their craft is preserved in Scripture.
Exodus 35:30 — "And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri."
1 Kings 7:14 — "He was a widow's son of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in brass: and he was filled with wisdom, and understanding, and cunning."
Acts 19:24 — "For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana."
Mark 6:3 — "Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary?"
Modern professional culture devalues manual artisan work; Scripture names the artisans by name and honors their Spirit-given skill.
Bezalel, Aholiab, Hiram — Scripture names artisans by name. The tabernacle and temple were built by men whose craft is preserved in the inspired record. The kingdom does not function without them.
Recover the dignity of the artisan and the church begins to honor again what God always honored. The carpenter, the welder, the seamstress, the cook, the artisanal programmer — each is a candidate for the Bezalel anointing of skilled work for the kingdom.
Greek tektōn (craftsman) and Hebrew charash (artisan, engraver) carry the concept.
Greek tektōn — craftsman; the title of Joseph and of Christ.
Hebrew charash — artisan, engraver, smith; one who shapes hard material with skill.
"Bezalel was Spirit-anointed for craft, not for rhetoric."
"Christ was an artisan; the trade is no shame."
"The kingdom honors the named artisan."
