Craft (Trade)
/KRAFT/
noun
Old English cræft (skill, strength); the learned trade by which one shapes material into useful or beautiful things.

📖 Biblical Definition

Craft is the learned trade — the manual skill by which one shapes wood, metal, cloth, or stone into useful or beautiful things. Scripture honors the craftsman explicitly and by name. "And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones... and in carving of timber" (Exodus 31:3-5) — Bezalel filled by the Spirit for craft work on the tabernacle. Christ Himself was a tektōn, the carpenter of Nazareth (Mark 6:3). Paul made tents to support his apostolic ministry (Acts 18:3). Skilled hands are sanctified hands.

CRAFT, n. Art; ability; dexterity; skill in a particular manual occupation. Manual art; trade; employment that requires manual skill.

Ex 31:1-5 records the first Spirit-anointing in Scripture: not a prophet or king but a craftsman, Bezalel, filled with the Spirit of God in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship.

📖 Key Scripture

Exodus 31:3"And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship."

Exodus 35:35"Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer."

Mark 6:3"Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon?"

Acts 18:3"And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern industrial culture has marginalized the craftsman; Scripture treats craft as Spirit-filled service worthy of named honor.

Bezalel and Aholiab (Ex 31, 35) are named at length and described as filled with the Spirit specifically for craft. The Spirit's first recorded indwelling is for the trade of working wood, metal, and cloth for God's house.

Industrial production has dignity, but craft has weight. The Christian craftsman — carpenter, mason, smith, weaver, cook, programmer at the artisanal end — serves God in the shape of his hands. Recover the dignity of craft and the household has more to honor in its breadwinners.

🔗 Greek & Hebrew Roots

Greek tektōn (craftsman, builder) and Hebrew melakah (work, craft) carry the concept.

Greek tektōn — craftsman, builder, carpenter; the title applied to Joseph and to Christ Himself (Mt 13:55; Mk 6:3).

Hebrew melakah — work, craft, occupation; the labor of Bezalel and Aholiab (Ex 35:35).

Usage

"Christ was a tekton; the trade is no shame."

"Bezalel's anointing was Spirit-filled craft, not Spirit-filled rhetoric."

"The household honors the breadwinner's shaped hands."
