The belt of truth is the first piece of the armor of God: stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth. The Roman soldier's belt held tunic, sword, and pouch in working position; without it the soldier was unable to fight. So the saint girded with truth: doctrinal truth, practical honesty, and the truth of one's own situation before God all integrated.
(Ephesians 6:14.) The first piece of the armor of God; the integrating piece without which the others cannot be borne.
Roman soldier's belt (cingulum militare) was foundational: held the tunic up for free movement, supported the sword's scabbard, carried the dagger and pouch. Without the belt, the soldier could not effectively wield any other weapon.
Spiritually: truth integrates. Doctrinal truth (orthodox confession), practical truth (truthful speech and dealing), and personal truth (honesty about one's own state) hold the saint's spiritual life together for combat.
Ephesians 6:14 — "Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth."
Isaiah 11:5 — "Righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins."
John 14:6 — "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
1 Peter 1:13 — "Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end."
Modern Christianity often softens truth; Ephesians 6 makes it the foundational integrating piece without which the rest of the armor is loose.
The belt is the first thing put on. Truth is the first thing the saint must hold to. Without it, the breastplate hangs crooked, the sword is unsheathed inconveniently, the rest of the armor goes loose.
Recovery is at three levels at once: orthodox doctrine (the truth about God), truthful speech (the saint's tongue), and honest self-knowledge (the truth about oneself). Loosen any of the three and the household's spiritual posture wobbles.
Greek alētheia (truth) and perizōnnymi (to gird about).
Greek alētheia — truth; that which is unconcealed.
Greek perizōnnymi — to gird about; the verb of putting on the belt.
"The belt is the first thing put on; truth is the first thing held to."
"Doctrinal, practical, and personal truth all integrated."
"Loosen any of the three and the saint's posture wobbles."
