Bow the Knee
/BOW thə NEE/
verb phrase
Old English būgan plus cnēow. The bending of the knee — Scripture's great prophesied gesture of universal submission to Christ.

📖 Biblical Definition

To bow the knee is to publicly confess submission and worship — the body’s amen to lordship claimed. "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear" (Isaiah 45:23; quoted Romans 14:11). Paul applies it specifically to Christ: "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth" (Philippians 2:10). The seven thousand in Israel who had not bowed the knee to Baal (1 Kings 19:18) are the model. Christian men bow the knee voluntarily to Christ now, that they may not be forced to bow at His judgment-seat then.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

Webster: bow — “to bend the body in token of respect or submission.”

The bent knee was, throughout the ancient world, the body's confession of allegiance — first to a conquering king, ultimately to the King of kings.

📖 Key Scripture

Isaiah 45:23"Unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear."

Romans 14:11"As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God."

Philippians 2:10"That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth."

1 Kings 19:18"Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern Christians often bow no knees, neither voluntarily in worship nor publicly in confession; Scripture says every knee will bow eventually.

Two passages frame the truth: Isaiah 45:23 and Philippians 2:10. Every knee will bow at the Name of Jesus — willingly now, or compulsorily then. The wise saint chooses the timing.

The household that bows knees together — literally, regularly — rehearses for the great day. Knees that bow at the family altar bow more easily in the workplace; knees that have never bent at home will not bend smoothly anywhere else.
