Worship
/ˈwɜːr.ʃɪp/
noun / verb
Old English weorthscipe — "worth-ship"; the condition of having worth or honor. From weorth (worthy, honorable) + -scipe (ship, condition). To ascribe ultimate worth to something or someone.

📖 Biblical Definition

Worship is the whole-person response of a creature to the Creator — ascribing to God His infinite worth through reverence, adoration, obedience, and sacrifice. It is not merely a Sunday activity but the comprehensive orientation of one's life toward God. True worship encompasses spirit and truth (John 4:24), and the first commandment ("no other gods") establishes worship as the foundational act of human existence. The Hebrew shachah (to bow down, prostrate) and Greek proskuneō (to kiss toward, bow before) both emphasize creaturely submission before divine majesty. Worship that God accepts is offered through Christ, the one Mediator (Hebrews 10:19–22), and is energized by the Holy Spirit.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

WOR'SHIP, n. 1. Chiefly and eminently, the act of paying divine honors to the Supreme Being; or the reverence and homage paid to him in religious exercises, consisting in adoration, confession, prayer, thanksgiving and the like. 2. The act of revering or honoring. 3. A term of ironical respect. WOR'SHIP, v.t. To adore; to pay divine honors to; to reverence with supreme respect and veneration.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern culture has severed "worship" from its exclusive object — God — and redefined it as any intense emotional experience or passionate devotion to anything. People "worship" celebrities, athletes, nature, and their own lifestyle choices. Within Christianity itself, worship has been reduced to a musical genre or emotional atmosphere, measured by production quality and emotional intensity rather than theological content and heart posture. "Worship music" has become an entertainment category, and "worship leader" a performance role. The Reformation's principle of Soli Deo Gloria (glory to God alone) confronts this confusion: true worship cannot be manufactured, manipulated, or misdirected to any lesser object.
