Cherubim of Eden
CHER-uh-bim
OT event
Hebrew keruvim (H3742). The angelic beings stationed by God at the east of the Garden of Eden after the fall, with a flaming sword turning every way, to keep the way of the tree of life (Gen 3:24).

📖 Biblical Definition

In Genesis 3:24, after expelling Adam and Eve from Eden, the Lord stationed cherubim with a flaming sword turning every way to keep the way of the tree of life. The cherubim are the angelic guardians of holy access; the same beings hover over the mercy seat of the ark (Ex 25:18-22), embroider the tabernacle veil (Ex 26:31), and surround the throne in Ezekiel and Revelation. They mark places where heaven meets earth and the Lord's glory is concentrated.

A scriptural cosmological event; the cherubim guarding Eden after the fall.

📖 Key Scripture

Genesis 3:24"So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."

Exodus 25:22"There I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims."

Hebrews 10:19"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus."

Revelation 22:14"Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Eden was guarded by cherubim; the cross opened access; Revelation restores the tree.

The cherubim at Eden's gate stood guard with a flaming sword. Sinful humanity could not return to the tree of life; the way back was closed. The same cherubim reappear on the mercy seat of the ark, signaling the only point at which sinful humanity could access God in the Old Covenant — through the blood of atonement.

The New Testament resolves the tension. Hebrews 10 says the saint now has boldness to enter the holiest by the blood of Jesus. The flaming sword fell on Christ instead of on us. Revelation 22 restores the tree of life to the redeemed: blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life. The cherubim once kept us out; the cross has let us in.
