Congregation
/ˌkɒŋ.ɡrɪˈɡeɪ.ʃən/
noun
Latin congregatio — a flock, assembly; from congregare (to flock together), from com- (together) + grex (flock). Hebrew: qahal (קָהָל) — the assembly called together; edah (עֵדָה) — the congregation as witness community. Greek: ekklesia (ἐκκλησία) — the called-out assembly.

📖 Biblical Definition

The congregation is the assembly of those called by God into covenant relationship with Himself. In the Old Testament, qahal designates the assembled people of Israel before God — particularly at Sinai and in the great feasts. The congregation is not merely a gathering; it is a covenant body convened by divine summons. Notably, qahal in the Septuagint is often rendered ekklesia — showing continuity between Israel's assembly and the New Testament church. To belong to the congregation is to stand in the presence of God as part of His covenant people, accountable to His law, sustained by His promises. This is not a voluntary association of like-minded individuals; it is a body constituted by God's call.

Webster 1828: CONGREGATION — n. 1. The act of congregating; collection into an assembly. 2. A collection of persons met for the worship of God and to hear his word. 3. In the Old Testament, the whole body of the Jewish people, the assembly of Israel. 4. A body of persons associated for worship.

Modern usage has reduced congregation to a consumer audience that attends a venue. The language of “audience,” “crowd,” “attendees,” and “weekend experience” reflects a market metaphor, not a covenant one. When church members evaluate services like products and church-hop for better programming, the biblical reality of covenant assembly is absent. The congregation is not a crowd — it is a body with mutual obligation, covenantal accountability, and shared witness before God. “Not neglecting to meet together” (Heb 10:25) assumes the assembly matters as more than a preference.
