Unity
/ˈyü-nə-tē/
noun
From Latin unitas (oneness, sameness), from unus (one); related to Greek heis/hen (one); the state of being one — not uniformity, but genuine oneness of person, purpose, or Spirit

📖 Biblical Definition

Biblical unity is rooted in the eternal oneness of the Trinity — "the LORD our God, the LORD is one" (Deut 6:4) — and flows from that divine reality into the community of believers. It is not manufactured agreement or forced uniformity, but the genuine bond created by the Holy Spirit through shared faith in Christ, shared experience of the Gospel, and shared submission to truth (Eph 4:3–6). Christ prayed for the unity of His disciples in John 17 — "that they may be one, even as we are one" — a unity that is a witness to the world. Paul commands believers to "maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace" (Eph 4:3) — not create it, but guard what the Spirit has already established. Unity is never achieved by silencing truth; false unity purchased by doctrinal compromise is not peace but deception.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

UNITY, n. The state of being one; oneness. In Scripture and theology, unity denotes the oneness of God in three persons; also the agreement and fellowship of believers as one body in Christ. "Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace." — Ephesians 4:3. The unity of the church consists in agreement in faith, love, and practice, under one head, Jesus Christ.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern ecumenism treats unity as the supreme virtue — to be pursued at the cost of doctrinal precision and maintained by suppressing disagreement. "Can't we all just get along?" becomes the highest theological principle, making division over truth the only unforgivable sin. But Paul himself opposed Peter to his face (Gal 2:11), anathematized false gospel teachers (Gal 1:8–9), and named divisive individuals by name (2 Tim 4:14). True unity, biblically, is unity in the truth — not unity purchased by abandoning it. Unity without truth is not peace; it is a shared walk in the wrong direction.
