Cornelius was a centurion of the Italian Cohort stationed in Caesarea — "a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God" (Acts 10:2). Despite his piety, he was not yet saved — an angel instructed him to send for Peter, who would declare a message "by which you will be saved" (Acts 11:14). God prepared Peter through a vision of unclean animals, teaching him that "God shows no partiality" (Acts 10:34). While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and his household, and they were baptized (Acts 10:44-48). Cornelius' conversion is the Pentecost of the Gentiles — the definitive proof that the gospel is not limited to Israel but extends to every nation under heaven.

Cornelius' pre-conversion piety is used by inclusivists and pluralists to argue that sincere people of other religions can be saved without hearing the gospel. But the text explicitly refutes this: despite his remarkable devotion, Cornelius needed to hear the gospel message "by which you will be saved" (Acts 11:14). His piety did not save him — it was the means by which God brought him into contact with the saving message. God sent Peter across ethnic and ceremonial boundaries specifically because Cornelius needed the gospel — not affirmation that his existing religion was enough.
