Counterfeit Spirit
/KOWN-ter-fit SPIR-it/
noun phrase
Latin contra plus facere (to make against) plus spirit. Composite term for an evil spiritual power impersonating the Holy Spirit.

📖 Biblical Definition

A counterfeit spirit is an evil spiritual power impersonating the Holy Spirit — or claiming inspiration from God while actually opposing Him. 1 John 4:1-3 commands the church: "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist." The test is Christological. Counterfeit spirits abound in every age — false revival, prosperity-gospel emotional manipulation, occult deception, demonic visitation. Test by Scripture and by Christology.

1 John 4:2-3 gives the doctrinal test: every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: and every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God.

Other tests in the New Testament: Jesus is Lord (1 Cor 12:3); the spirit's work matches Christ's own (the Spirit testifies of Christ, Jn 15:26); fruit, not phenomena, is the diagnostic (Mt 7:16).

📖 Key Scripture

1 John 4:1"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."

1 John 4:3"And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist."

1 Corinthians 12:3"No man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost."

Matthew 7:16"Ye shall know them by their fruits."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern Christianity often accepts spiritual phenomena uncritically; 1 John 4 commands testing.

Try the spirits is a command, not a suggestion. The church's task is doctrinal discernment of every spiritual claim. Excitement, emotion, success, even miracles do not authenticate; the doctrine of Christ's incarnation does.

The household's discipline: when something feels spiritually impressive, ask the doctrinal question. Does this messenger confess Christ come in the flesh? Does this teaching exalt Him as Lord? Does the fruit ripen toward Christlikeness? Negative answers identify counterfeit spirits.
