A false prophet is one who claims to speak on behalf of God but delivers a message that contradicts God's revealed Word. In the Old Testament, the test of a prophet was twofold: His prophecies must come to pass, and His teaching must not lead people away from the true God (Deuteronomy 13:1-3; Deuteronomy 18:22). Jesus warned that false prophets would come in sheep's clothing but inwardly be ravenous wolves (Matthew 7:15). In Revelation, the False Prophet is a specific eschatological figure who serves the Beast and deceives the nations through signs and wonders (Revelation 19:20).
Prophet: one who foretells future events; one who utters predictions under divine influence.
PROPH'ET, n. [Gr. prophetes.] 1. One that foretells future events; a predicter; a foreteller. 2. In Scripture, a person illuminated, inspired, or instructed by God to announce future events. A false prophet is one who pretends to divine inspiration but delivers messages not from God. Note: Webster recognized that the title "prophet" carries the weight of divine authority -- and that to falsely claim it is among the gravest of sins.
• Matthew 7:15 — "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."
• Deuteronomy 18:20 — "The prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I have not commanded him to speak... that same prophet shall die."
• 2 Peter 2:1 — "False prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you."
• 1 John 4:1 — "Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God."
• Revelation 19:20 — "The beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who... had performed the signs."
The category of false prophet has been softened into disagreement rather than deception.
Modern Christianity has largely abandoned the biblical category of false prophet. Calling someone a false prophet is now considered uncharitable, divisive, or judgmental. But Jesus Himself commanded it. The church today is filled with men and women who claim to speak for God -- prophesying prosperity, declaring new revelations, and tickling ears with messages of affirmation -- while contradicting the clear teaching of Scripture. The charismatic movement has produced thousands of self-proclaimed prophets whose predictions fail repeatedly, yet they face no accountability. Meanwhile, progressive pastors who deny the resurrection, affirm sexual immorality, and reject the authority of Scripture continue to hold positions of influence. The failure to identify and expose false prophets is not love -- it is the abandonment of the sheep to wolves.
• "A false prophet is not merely someone who makes a mistake -- He is someone who claims divine authority for a message God never gave."
• "Jesus did not say to dialogue with false prophets. He said to beware of them and to know them by their fruits."
• "The modern church has more false prophets on its stages than the court of Ahab had in all Israel."
