The curtain (veil) is the Bible's supreme symbol of separation from God — and of the access that Christ's death secured. The tabernacle had layers of them: the screen at the courtyard gate, the screen at the Holy Place door, and the inner veil before the Most Holy that only the high priest passed through once a year with blood. Embroidered with cherubim, these curtains were visible reminders that ever since the fall, cherubim with flaming swords guarded God's presence (Gen 3:24). At the moment of Christ's death, the temple curtain (paroketh) was torn in two "from top to bottom" (Matt 27:51) — God Himself rending the veil. Hebrews 10:19-20 interprets: "we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh." The curtain was His body; His body torn is the curtain torn.

CUR'TAIN, n. [Fr. courtine; L. cortina.] (1.) A cloth hanging, used in rooms for ornament, for enclosing beds, or for darkening windows. (2.) In architecture, that part of a wall or rampart which extends between two bastions. (3.) In Scripture, the curtains of the tabernacle were the great embroidered coverings of fine linen, blue, purple, and scarlet, which composed its walls; and the inner veil (paroketh) was the curtain hung between the Holy Place and the Most Holy, before the ark of the covenant. At the crucifixion of our Lord, this veil was rent in twain from the top to the bottom, to signify that through his death a new and living way was consecrated into the presence of God for all believers.
Matthew 27:50-51 — "Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom."

Exodus 26:31 — "You shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It shall be made with cherubim skillfully worked into it."

Evangelicals casually speak of access to God without remembering what it cost: a torn curtain is a torn body.
Every time you pray "in Jesus' name," you are walking through the torn curtain. The average Christian approaches the throne with less reverence than the high priest approached it once a year with blood. Recover the weight of it: God dwelt behind embroidered cherubim, guarded by death, unapproachable by any unclean person for 1,400 years — and then, on one Friday afternoon, the curtain split from top to bottom because a Man died outside the city. Approach lightly, and you have not understood. Approach reverently, and you honor the price of access. "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith" (Heb 10:22) — the words true heart and full assurance are balanced; reverence and boldness together.
