An idol is anything occupying God's place in our hearts. "You shall have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). Digital idolatry is the modern manifestation: the phone is the shrine, the algorithm is the oracle, social media is the source of identity, and screen time has replaced prayer time. When technology commands more attention and trust than God, it has become an idol.
Not a standalone entry. Webster defines IDOLATRY as "the worship of idols or anything not God."
Webster defines IDOL'ATRY as "excessive attachment or veneration for anything." By this definition, compulsive attachment to digital devices is idolatry.
• Exodus 20:3 — "You shall have no other gods before me."
• 1 John 5:21 — "Little children, keep yourselves from idols."
• Colossians 3:5 — "Covetousness, which is idolatry."
• Matthew 6:21 — "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
Technology has become the functional religion of the modern world.
The average person checks their phone 150+ times daily, spends 7+ hours on screens, and experiences anxiety when separated from their device. These are worship patterns. Social media exploits the same neural pathways as gambling. It promises connection but delivers isolation, promises knowledge but delivers distraction, promises identity but delivers envy. The battle for the soul is increasingly a battle for attention — and the screen is winning.
• "Digital idolatry is not metaphor — when your phone is the first thing you reach for, you've identified your functional god."
• "The algorithm knows your desires better than your pastor — because you've given it more of your attention and honesty."
