Egalitarian-Complementarian
/ɪˌɡæl.ɪˈtɛr.i.ən ˌkɒm.plɪˈmɛn.tɛr.i.ən/
adjective / noun
The two major evangelical positions on gender roles. Egalitarians hold men and women are interchangeable in all roles; complementarians hold they are equal in dignity but distinct in function and calling.

📖 Biblical Definition

The complementarian position holds men and women are equally created in God's image (Genesis 1:27) and equally redeemed (Galatians 3:28), but with distinct roles in marriage (Ephesians 5:22-33) and church (1 Timothy 2:12). The debate centers on whether gender distinctions are creational (complementarian) or cultural (egalitarian).

MOOP's position is patriarchal — neither egalitarian nor the 1987 CBMW complementarian halfway house. Patriarchy names what Scripture names: fathers rule households, elders shepherd churches, women honor and flourish under Christlike male leadership that sacrifices for them. We affirm the substance of complementarian doctrine where it is held with conviction, but the softer 1987 label has not held — complementarian-in-name churches routinely drift into functional egalitarianism (women preaching, teaching mixed adult classes, exercising de facto elder authority) while keeping the term in their SOF. Hold the stronger word: patriarchal, under Christlike sacrificial love.

Webster defines EQUALITY as "agreement in dimensions or quality" and COMPLEMENT as "that which completes." The complementarian view holds that man and woman complete each other in distinct roles.

📖 Key Scripture

Genesis 1:27 — "God created man in His own image... male and female He created them."

Ephesians 5:22-25 — "Wives, submit to your own husbands... Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church."

1 Timothy 2:12 — "I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man."

Galatians 3:28 — "There is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

1 Peter 3:7 — "Showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Both positions are corrupted when equality erases distinction or distinction erases equality.

Egalitarianism taken to its conclusion erases male/female distinction — leading to the abolition of gender itself. If there is no meaningful difference, 'male' and 'female' are social constructs. Complementarianism is corrupted when headship becomes domination — authority divorced from sacrificial love. The biblical vision holds both: full equality in dignity, real distinction in calling. Equality without distinction becomes androgyny; distinction without equality becomes oppression.

Usage

• "Complementarianism holds that equality of dignity does not require identity of function."

• "Egalitarianism begins by erasing role distinctions and ends by erasing gender distinctions — a straight line to gender ideology."

• "The corruption of complementarianism is drift into functional egalitarianism. The corruption of egalitarianism is androgynous confusion. Patriarchal headship exercised in Christlike love is neither — it is the creational design Scripture actually teaches (Eph 5:25-33)."
