El Elyon
EL el-YOHN
proper noun (divine name)
Hebrew El Elyon (H410 + H5945), “God Most High.” The name God uses through Melchizedek when blessing Abram in Genesis 14, and the name by which Daniel declares God's sovereignty over kingdoms and kings.

📖 Biblical Definition

El Elyon (אֵל עֶלְיוֹן) — "God Most High" — is the divine name emphasizing God’s supreme rank above all rulers, gods, and powers — the One whose throne is above every throne. Melchizedek the priest-king of Salem first uses the name to Abraham: "Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth" (Genesis 14:19). Abraham himself adopts it: "I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God" (14:22). David sings it (Psalm 7:17; 9:2; 47:2; 78:35). Daniel uses it before Nebuchadnezzar to declare the political theology of the whole book: "the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will" (Daniel 4:25, 32).

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern man crowns himself; El Elyon already wears the only crown that matters.

El Elyon is the political name of God. Melchizedek introduces Him in Genesis 14 right after a war — the King-Priest blessing Abram from a higher throne than any king of Sodom or Mesopotamia. Daniel pulls the name out repeatedly when speaking to Babylonian and Persian sovereigns. The message is unmistakable: every empire is on a leash held by El Elyon.

Modern man, like Nebuchadnezzar at his peak, walks around proud of the kingdoms he has built and forgets Who lent him the loan. The God Most High eventually drives him out into the field to eat grass with the oxen until he knows that the Most High rules. America, Rome, Babylon, Egypt — the lesson does not change. Bow voluntarily now, or be bowed eventually. El Elyon does not lose the throne contest.
