Enoch
/EE-nok/
proper noun (figure)
Hebrew Chanoch, “dedicated”; seventh from Adam; walked with God and was translated.

📖 Biblical Definition

Enoch was the seventh from Adam (Gen 5:18-24, Jude 1:14), father of Methuselah, who walked with God: and he was not; for God took him (Gen 5:24). Hebrews 11:5 elaborates: by faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death... before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. Jude 1:14-15 cites him as a prophet who foretold the coming judgment of the ungodly. He is one of two Old Testament figures (with Elijah) who did not die.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern Christianity often forgets Enoch; his walk with God is the antediluvian high point and his translation prefigures the saints' final escape from death.

Walked with God is the great phrase. Daily walked, year after year, 300 years; eventually walked from this world into the next without dying. Hebrews puts it as faith's working: by faith he pleased God; faith's reward was translation.

Some saints will not see death (1 Thess 4:17 — those alive at Christ's return will be caught up). Enoch and Elijah are pre-figures of that company. The household's walk-with-God is the same disposition that, in extreme form, accomplished Enoch's translation.

Hebrew Chanoch — from chanak, to dedicate.

Note: distinct from Cain's son Enoch (Gen 4:17) and the city named after him; the antediluvian Enoch of Gen 5 is the seventh from Adam through the Sethite line.

Usage

"He walked with God: and he was not; for God took him."

"Faith's reward was translation."
