A false teacher is one who occupies a position of teaching authority within the visible church but introduces doctrines that contradict the apostolic faith. Peter warns that "false teachers among you will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them" (2 Peter 2:1). Unlike false prophets who claim new revelation, false teachers distort existing Scripture and apostolic teaching. Paul warned the Ephesian elders that "from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them" (Acts 20:30). The danger of false teachers is that they operate from within the church, using the language of faith to advance unfaith.
Teacher: one who instructs; one whose business is to communicate truth.
TEACH'ER, n. 1. One who teaches or instructs. 2. One whose business or occupation is to instruct others. 3. An instructor; a preceptor. A false teacher is one who instructs contrary to the truth, particularly divine truth. Note: Webster recognized that teaching carries moral weight -- to teach falsely in God's name is to compound the sin of lying with the sin of blasphemy.
• 2 Peter 2:1 — "False teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies."
• 2 Timothy 4:3 — "The time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers."
• Acts 20:29-30 — "Fierce wolves will come in among you... from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things."
• Galatians 1:8 — "Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached, let him be accursed."
Calling out false teachers is now condemned as unloving and divisive.
The modern church has redefined love as the refusal to confront error. To name a false teacher is to be accused of being judgmental, uncharitable, or lacking grace. But the apostles named false teachers explicitly -- Paul named Hymenaeus and Alexander (1 Timothy 1:20), and John named Diotrephes (3 John 1:9). The evangelical celebrity culture has made false teachers untouchable because they command large audiences and generate revenue. Pastors who deny the atonement, affirm homosexual practice, or reject the bodily resurrection are given platforms at major conferences while those who confront them are labeled divisive. This inversion is itself a fulfillment of Paul's warning.
• "A false teacher is more dangerous than an open enemy of the faith because he wears the uniform of a shepherd while leading the sheep to slaughter."
• "James warned that teachers will be judged more strictly -- how much more those who teach what is false in the name of Christ?"
