Genre recognition is the hermeneutical discipline of identifying a biblical passage’s literary type before interpreting it. Scripture contains many genres: narrative (Genesis, Acts), poetry (Psalms), prophecy (Isaiah), parable (Luke 15), apocalyptic (Daniel 7, Revelation), epistle (Romans), wisdom (Proverbs), law (Leviticus), genealogy (1 Chronicles), gospel (Mark). Each genre has its own conventions, devices, and reading rules. Reading a parable as historical narrative or an apocalyptic vision as flat prediction will distort the text — as will reading poetry as prose, or law as gospel. Right reading begins with right genre identification. The literal sense of Scripture includes the figurative when the figurative is what the author intended.

Major biblical genres: narrative (Genesis, Samuel, Acts), law (Leviticus, Deuteronomy), poetry / wisdom (Psalms, Proverbs, Job), prophecy (Isaiah, Jeremiah, the minor prophets), apocalyptic (Daniel, Revelation), gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), epistle (Paul's letters, Hebrews, the Catholic epistles).
Sub-genres complicate further: imprecatory psalms, lament psalms, royal psalms, wisdom psalms; legal narrative; covenantal lawsuits; parables within Gospels; hymns within epistles. Genre recognition is granular work.

Modern Christianity often flattens genre distinctions; Revelation gets read as predictive prose, parables as historical accounts, psalms as systematic theology. Each loses what genre awareness preserves.
Revelation is apocalyptic, not predictive prose. Apocalyptic uses symbol-laden visions to convey theological truths about God's sovereign control of history. Reading it as flat prediction generates the wildest interpretive errors of modern Christianity.
Parables are stories with a teaching point, not historical narratives. The Good Samaritan (Lk 10) is not journalism; it is a parable. The household's reading lightens when genre is recognized: the right kind of question, asked of the right kind of text.
