Goodness
GUUD-nis
noun
Old English gōd. Hebrew tov (H2896) and chesed in some senses; Greek agathosune (G19), “intrinsic, active goodness” — the goodness that does.

📖 Biblical Definition

Goodness is moral excellence active in benefit toward others — not merely the absence of evil, but the positive presence of generous, doing-good. It is listed in the fruit of the Spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith" (Galatians 5:22) and in "the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth" (Ephesians 5:9). Goodness is God’s own attribute reflected in His people: "O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever" (Psalm 107:1). Paul commends Barnabas: "For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith" (Acts 11:24). Christian goodness does what is right and is generous in doing it.

Romans 2:4 contains a sentence that ought to disarm every cynic: the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance. Not threats. Not algorithms. Not fear of hell first. The kindness of God melts the hard heart. Many evangelistic strategies have run aground because they tried to harvest repentance without showcasing the Goodness that produces it.

Goodness is also distinguishable from kindness. Kindness in Greek is chrestotes (warm disposition); goodness is agathosune (active, beneficial doing). Both are fruit of the Spirit. The Christian is not just to feel kind; he is to do good. To the orphan in James 1:27, the brother in 1 John 3:17, the stranger in Hebrews 13:2. Sentimentality is not goodness; rolled-up sleeves are.
