Christ's second I-AM predicate-statement: "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life" (John 8:12). Spoken at the Feast of Tabernacles, when temple lights illuminated the entire courtyard. Christ claims to be the true Light those lights symbolized. The promise is two-fold: those who follow do not walk in darkness AND have the light of life.
John 8:12 second I-AM: spoken at Tabernacles' lamp-lighting; promise of light to followers.
Christ's second I-AM predicate-statement (John 8:12, repeated 9:5): "I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." Spoken at the Feast of Tabernacles, when in the temple courtyard four enormous golden candelabra (each holding four bowls of oil) were lit on the first night, illuminating not only the temple but a large portion of Jerusalem. Christ chooses that setting to claim He is the true Light those temple-lights symbolized. The promise has two parts: (1) following Him produces no-walking-in-darkness; (2) following Him produces having-the-light-of-life.
John 8:12 — "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
John 1:4-5 — "In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not."
1 John 1:5 — "This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."
Often softened to general inspiration; Christ's claim is exclusive (the Light, not a light) and follow-conditioned.
"Light" gets used loosely in modern spirituality. Christ's claim is exclusive: THE light, not A light. And the promise is conditioned on following: those who follow do not walk in darkness. The non-followers walk in darkness regardless of how spiritual they feel.
Recover the exclusivity AND the conditioning: Christ alone is the light; following Him produces the light's effects. Both halves are essential.
