Light
/lฤซt/
noun / verb / adjective
Old English lฤ“oht (brightness, radiance); Proto-Germanic *leukhtam; from Proto-Indo-European *lewk- (light, brightness); cognate with Latin lux and Greek leukรณs (white, bright)

๐Ÿ“– Biblical Definition

Light is the first act of creation (Gen 1:3) and the defining attribute of God Himself โ€” "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all" (1 John 1:5). It is the dominant biblical metaphor for truth, holiness, divine presence, salvation, and life itself. God's Word is a "lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Ps 119:105). Christ is the "true light, which gives light to everyone" (John 1:9) and declared plainly, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12). Remarkably, believers are also called light โ€” not by nature, but by union with Christ: "You are the light of the world" (Matt 5:14). The eschatological vision is a New Jerusalem with no sun or moon because the Lamb is its light (Rev 21:23). Light reveals, exposes, guides, purifies, and gives life โ€” all of which Christ does for His people.

๐Ÿ“œ Webster 1828 Definition

LIGHT, n. That ethereal agent or matter which makes objects perceptible to the sense of seeing. In Scripture, light is used to denote the favor of God, joy and comfort; also knowledge, truth, and understanding. God is called light; Christ is called the light of the world; and Christians are called the children of light and lights of the world.

โš ๏ธ Modern Corruption

Modern spirituality has privatized "light" โ€” making it a personal inner glow of self-discovery, divorced from Christ and from truth. "Find your inner light," "be your own light," and "send light and love" strip the word of its propositional content and its exclusive source. Biblically, light is not something you generate โ€” it is something you receive from its only Source (John 15:5). The world's spiritual appropriation of "light" language while rejecting Christ is the exact deception Isaiah warned against: calling darkness light and light darkness (Isa 5:20).

๐Ÿ“– Key Scripture

John 1:4โ€“5 โ€” "In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it."

John 8:12 โ€” "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Matthew 5:14โ€“16 โ€” "You are the light of the world... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father."

1 John 1:5 โ€” "God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."
