Integrity
/ɪnˈtɛɡ.rɪ.ti/
noun
Latin integritas — soundness, wholeness, purity; from integer, meaning whole, untouched, complete. Integrity is the state of being undivided — the same person in public and in private.

📖 Biblical Definition

The quality of being whole and undivided in one's moral character — thinking, speaking, and acting consistently with God's truth whether observed or unobserved. The man of integrity walks in the fear of the Lord at home and in public, in the boardroom and the prayer closet. He does not have a 'business self' and a 'church self' — his soul is integrated under the lordship of Christ. Integrity is the foundation upon which all other virtues stand.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

INTEG'RITY, n. The entire, unimpaired state of anything, particularly of the mind; moral soundness or purity; incorruptness; uprightness; honesty. Integrity comprehends the whole moral character, but has a special reference to uprightness in mutual dealings, transfer of property, and fulfillment of contracts. We say a man of integrity, to describe a man who is honest and just in his dealings with others.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Integrity has been compartmentalized in modern culture — 'personal integrity' versus 'professional conduct,' or 'what I believe privately' versus 'what I do publicly.' Politicians, executives, and even ministers routinely live double lives. Moral relativism makes integrity meaningless: if truth is personal, there's nothing to be integrated toward. True integrity requires an absolute standard — which is why it only fully makes sense in a biblical framework.

📖 Key Scripture

Psalm 15:1-2"O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent?... He who walks blamelessly and does what is right."

Proverbs 10:9"Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out."

Titus 2:7"Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity."

Proverbs 11:3"The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them."
