Simplicity
/sim-PLIS-i-tee/
spiritual discipline
Latin simplicitas — singleness, unmixed, without fold or duplicity.

📖 Biblical Definition

The discipline of single-eyed devotion to God that frees the heart from divided loyalties. Christ's extended teaching in Matthew 6:19-34 sets the pattern: The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light... Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Greek haplotes (singleness, sincerity, generous undivided focus) appears in 2 Corinthians 11:3: I fear, lest by any means... your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Corinthians 8:2 uses the same word for generous-undivided giving. The disciplined Christian simplicity is not poverty as such but unencumbered devotion — the heart so focused on God's kingdom that food, clothing, tomorrow, and possessions lose their tyrannical grip. The biblical man owns things; things do not own him.

📖 Key Scripture

Matthew 6:24"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon."

Matthew 6:33"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

Luke 12:15"Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses."

2 Corinthians 11:3"I fear, lest somehow… your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern Christianity confuses simplicity with minimalism aesthetics or poverty. Scripture defines it as singleness of devotion — not how much you own, but Whom you serve.

The wellness industry sells “simple living” as a curated Instagram aesthetic — linen sheets, sourdough starters, and decluttered shelves. Christianity baptizes this trend and calls it spirituality. But Jesus did not say “own less” — He said “serve One.” A man with two coats can be simpler than a man with none, if his heart is undivided.

Scripture corrects the picture: simplicity is the opposite of duplicity, not the opposite of abundance. It is a single eye fixed on the kingdom, a heart that refuses to split allegiance between God and mammon. The minimalist may still worship his curated emptiness. The disciple worships Christ — and his possessions, many or few, become tools rather than masters.
