Jehovah-Nissi (יְהוָה נִסִּי) — "the LORD my banner" — is the covenant name Moses gave the altar he built at Rephidim after Israel defeated Amalek not by Joshua’s sword in the valley but by Moses’ lifted hands on the hilltop (Exodus 17:8-16). The banner (nes) of an army was its rallying point and its identity in battle — a tall standard visible across the field around which the troops gathered. Israel’s rallying point is therefore the LORD Himself, and the victory belongs to Him: "Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation" (17:16). Christian men march under one banner: the cross of the LORD Jesus Christ.
BAN'NER, n.
1. A square flag; a military ensign; the principal standard of a prince or state. 2. Jehovah-Nissi — the Lord my banner; a name of God commemorating Israel's victory over Amalek.
Exodus 17:15 — "Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi."
Exodus 17:11 — "It came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed."
Psalm 60:4 — "Thou hast given a banner to them that fear thee."
Isaiah 11:10 — "There shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people."
Modern strategy looks to Joshua's sword; the actual battle is won at Moses's hands.
Rephidim is the great parable of spiritual warfare. While Joshua fought below, Moses stood on the hill with the rod of God in his hand — and the moment his hands sagged, Amalek prevailed. Aaron and Hur sat him on a stone and held his arms up until sundown. The visible battle was at the swordpoint; the actual battle was in intercession.
The modern church often gets this backwards. We strategize like Joshua and forget Moses. Apologetics, programs, platforms — all lawful, none decisive. The decisive war is fought on the hill: prayer, fasting, lifted hands, brothers holding each other's arms up. Jehovah-Nissi is the banner of that war. Lift it; the enemy retreats.
Hebrew YHWH-Nissi (H3068 + H5251).
H3068 — YHWH — the LORD
H5251 — nes — banner, ensign, signal-pole
"The decisive battle is fought on the hill, not on the field."
"When Moses's hands sagged, Amalek prevailed; brothers exist to hold up arms."
"Strategy belongs to Joshua; victory belongs to Jehovah-Nissi."
