Jehovah-Rapha (יְהוָה רֹפְאֶךָ) — "the LORD that healeth thee" — is the covenant name God revealed at Marah after Moses cast the tree into the bitter waters and they were made sweet: "If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee" (Exodus 15:26). The Hebrew rapha covers physical healing, spiritual healing, and the binding-up of the broken-hearted. The Healer of bodies in the Old Testament becomes the Healer of bodies and souls in the Gospels and the consummator of all healing in Revelation 21:4.
HEAL'ER, n.
He that cures, or restores from sickness or wounds. Jehovah-Rapha — the Lord that healeth, a name of God revealed at the waters of Marah.
Exodus 15:26 — "I am the Lord that healeth thee."
Psalm 103:3 — "Who healeth all thy diseases."
Isaiah 53:5 — "With his stripes we are healed."
1 Peter 2:24 — "By whose stripes ye were healed."
Two corruptions: denying His healing power; demanding it on consumer terms.
Jehovah-Rapha is misunderstood by both extremes. Hard-cessationist Christianity often acts as though physical healing ended with the apostles — despite Scripture's consistent witness that I am the Lord that healeth thee is the covenant name of the One who does not change. Soft-prosperity Christianity treats the name as a guarantee, demanding healing on consumer terms and excommunicating God when He says no.
The truth is steadier. God heals when He wills, often through means (doctors, medicine, food, rest), sometimes directly, always wisely. Paul prayed three times for the thorn and was given grace instead. Job's body was eventually restored, but the comfort came before the healing. Trust Jehovah-Rapha with the outcome. He has healed every redeemed body forever; the timeline is His.
