John, the son of Zebedee, was a Galilean fisherman called by Jesus to be one of the twelve apostles. He was part of the inner circle with Peter and James, present at the Transfiguration, Gethsemane, and the raising of Jairus' daughter. He is identified as "the disciple whom Jesus loved" (John 13:23) — a title of intimacy, not favoritism. John stood at the foot of the cross when other disciples had fled, and Jesus entrusted His mother Mary to John's care (John 19:26-27). His Gospel is the most theological of the four, opening with the eternal pre-existence of the Word who is God and became flesh (John 1:1-14). John's three epistles center on the tests of genuine faith: obedience, love, and sound doctrine. The book of Revelation, received in exile on Patmos, is the capstone of all Scripture — the unveiling of Christ's sovereign victory over Satan, sin, and death, culminating in the new heavens and new earth. John's theology is dominated by the themes of light and darkness, truth and falsehood, love and hatred, life and death — all centered on the person and work of Christ.

• John 1:1 — "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
• John 1:14 — "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory."
• 1 John 4:8 — "Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love."
• 1 John 1:5 — "God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all."
• Revelation 22:20 — "He who testifies to these things says, 'Surely I am coming soon.' Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!"
John's theology of love is sentimentalized while his theology of truth and judgment is ignored.
Modern Christianity latches onto "God is love" (1 John 4:8) while ignoring the context: John wrote that epistle to combat false teachers and to give tests by which genuine faith can be distinguished from counterfeit. John is the apostle of love, but his love is inseparable from truth — he commands believers not to receive false teachers into their homes (2 John 10-11). His Gospel contains the most exclusive claims of Christ: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). Revelation is the most politically incorrect book in Scripture — a vision of divine wrath poured out on a rebellious world, culminating in the final judgment. To quote John on love while ignoring his insistence on doctrinal purity and coming judgment is to create a false John who would never have written Revelation.
