Having the mind of Christ means being transformed in your thinking to see reality from God's perspective through the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote that the natural person cannot understand the things of the Spirit of God — they are spiritually discerned — but "we have the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:14-16). In Philippians 2:5, Paul commands believers to "have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus" — and then describes Christ's humility in leaving glory, taking the form of a servant, and obeying unto death. The mind of Christ is therefore both intellectual (understanding spiritual truth) and moral (humility, obedience, self-sacrifice). It is cultivated through Scripture, prayer, and the ongoing work of the Spirit who renews the mind (Romans 12:2).
Mind: the intellectual or intelligent power in man; the understanding; the power that conceives, judges, or reasons.
MIND, n. [Sax.] The intellectual or intelligent power in man; the understanding. The mind includes the faculties of perceiving, thinking, judging, willing, and reasoning. Note: Webster understood the mind as the seat of understanding and moral reasoning — exactly the faculty that must be renewed in Christ.
• 1 Corinthians 2:16 — "Who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ."
• Philippians 2:5-8 — "Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who ... emptied Himself, by taking the form of a servant."
• Romans 12:2 — "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind."
• Colossians 3:2 — "Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth."
The mind of Christ has been reduced to positive thinking or subjective spiritual impressions.
Modern Christianity often reduces "the mind of Christ" to either positive thinking or mystical intuition. Prosperity preachers claim the mind of Christ means thinking yourself into success. Charismatic teachers use it to justify subjective spiritual impressions as divine revelation. But the mind of Christ in Scripture is neither optimism nor intuition — it is Spirit-illuminated understanding of divine truth as revealed in Scripture, combined with the moral disposition of humble obedience. You gain the mind of Christ not through visualization techniques but through the diligent study of God's Word and the Spirit's transforming work in your thinking.
• "The mind of Christ is not positive thinking — it is Spirit-illuminated understanding of divine truth through Scripture."
• "Paul did not say think happy thoughts — he said have the mind of Christ: humility, obedience, and self-sacrifice."
