The historical event of Christ's birth in Bethlehem of Judaea (Matt 1, Luke 2), in fulfillment of the prophecy of Micah 5:2; born of the virgin Mary, to Joseph of the house of David, in a stable, laid in a manger, announced to shepherds by an angel and a multitude of the heavenly host. The Nativity is the moment the eternal Son took true human nature without ceasing to be true God.
NATIV'ITY, n.
1. Birth; the coming into life or the world. 2. The Nativity — the birth of Christ; also, the festival in commemoration of his birth, called Christmas.
Luke 2:7 — "She brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."
Matthew 2:1 — "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king."
Micah 5:2 — "Thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel."
John 1:14 — "The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us."
Modern Christmas keeps the manger and edits out the doctrine; the Nativity is precise theology in a stable.
Modern Christmas can be enjoyed without the doctrine: lights, gifts, family, sentiment. The Nativity itself is sterner. It says the eternal Son took true human nature in a manger; that the Mighty God lay as an infant; that the One who created the cattle was warmed by their breath; that the One whose feet would be pierced was wrapped in swaddling clothes. None of this is metaphor. It is incarnational fact.
The Nativity is also political. Caesar Augustus thought he had decreed the census; he had actually been used to fulfill Micah 5:2 and put Joseph and Mary in Bethlehem. Herod thought he had power to kill the Child; the Child was already in Egypt. The Nativity teaches that the Lord governs history at the level of imperial decrees and dictator paranoia, and uses both to land His Son exactly where He intended. Christmas is gentler than this in retail; the Bible is more precise.
