Shield
/ʃiːld/
noun / verb
Old English: scield — protective board; Proto-Germanic: skelduz — shield; Hebrew: מָגֵן (māgēn) — shield, buckler; Greek: θυρεός (thyreos) — large oblong shield (door-shaped)

📖 Biblical Definition

The shield is one of Scripture's most evocative images for God's protecting presence. The very first words God speaks to Abram after his military victory are: "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield" (Genesis 15:1). Throughout the Psalms, God is repeatedly called a shield — the One who deflects the arrows of the enemy, the slanders of enemies, and the terrors of the night. In Paul's armor of God passage (Ephesians 6:16), the "shield of faith" is the thyreos — a large Roman shield soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows — representing the believer's active trust in God's promises as the primary defense against the enemy's attacks. A shield is not passive; it requires a warrior to raise it.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

SHIELD, n. [Sax. scild, sceld, scyld; G. schild.] 1. A broad piece of defensive armor, carried on the arm, for the protection of the body in close combat. 2. Defense; protection. 3. In heraldry, the escutcheon or field on which are placed the bearings in coats of arms. v.t. 1. To cover with a shield; to protect from danger; to defend; to secure from assault. 2. To ward off; to defend against.

⚠️ Modern Corruption

The age of "safe spaces" has redefined "shielding" as the suppression of challenging ideas, difficult truths, or offensive speech. "Shield" has been co-opted by a therapeutic culture that uses protection as a pretext for avoiding growth, difficulty, and truth. Biblical shielding is precisely the opposite: God's protection does not remove hardship but enables His people to face it without being destroyed. The "shield of faith" does not deflect suffering — it deflects despair. God does not promise to keep His children from the battle; He promises to be their shield within it.
