Shield
/ʃiːld/
noun
Old English scield. Hebrew magen (מָגֵן), the common round or oval shield; tsinnah (צִנָּה), the larger, body-length shield. Greek thyreos (θυρεός) — literally "door-shaped" — the Roman legionary's curved body shield used to form the testudo formation. The shield is Scripture's defensive weapon par excellence and the repeated image of God Himself as the believer's protector.

📖 Biblical Definition

The shield is the Bible's image of God as the believer's active protector. "Fear not, Abram, I am your shield" (Gen 15:1) is the first divine self-designation of this kind. Psalms and Deuteronomy repeatedly call the LORD "my shield" (Ps 3:3, 18:2, 28:7, 33:20, 84:11, 115:9-11, 144:2; Deut 33:29). The righteous woman of Proverbs 31 "looks well to the ways of her household" with a shield's vigilance. In the armor-of-God passage (Eph 6:16), Paul specifies the thyreos — the large body shield — "of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one." Faith is the door-sized barrier between the Christian and every fire-tipped arrow of accusation, temptation, and doubt Satan shoots.

SHIELD, n.

SHIELD, n. [Sax. scield.] (1.) A broad piece of defensive armor, formerly carried on the arm, to protect the person in battle. (2.) Figuratively, any protection, defense. In Scripture, the shield is most commonly the figure of the LORD Himself, who declares to Abram, "I am thy shield;" the Psalms repeatedly address God as "my shield, and the horn of my salvation;" and Paul, describing the armor of God, commands believers to take the shield of faith, that large Roman body-shield by which the flaming darts of the evil one are extinguished.

📖 Key Scripture

Genesis 15:1"Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great."

Psalm 18:2"The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold."

Ephesians 6:16"In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one."

Psalm 84:11"The LORD God is a sun and shield; the LORD bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

The modern Christian often fights spiritual warfare with bare skin — no shield of faith raised — and wonders why the flaming darts burn so deep.

Every unbelieving thought is a flaming dart. Every accusation of the enemy, every whisper of temptation, every doubt about God's character is an arrow tipped with fire, aimed at the vital organs of the soul. Paul's command is specific: take up the shield of faith. Not generic positive thinking. Faith — trust in God's revealed Word, His promises, His character, His Son. When the dart of accusation says "you are filthy," faith raises the shield: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus" (Rom 8:1). When the dart of doubt says "God doesn't care," faith raises the shield: "He did not spare his own Son" (Rom 8:32). The darts extinguish on Scripture quoted by faith. A saint unarmed is a saint on fire; pick up the shield.
