"Shout for joy" is the audible, loud, jubilant cry commanded as worship-response throughout the Psalms — not silent inner happiness but outward voiced jubilation. "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise" (Psalm 98:4; cf. 32:11; 35:27; 47:1; 66:1; 81:1; 95:1; 100:1). Worship in Scripture has volume; the saints lift up the voice together. The same word covers victory shouts of armies (1 Samuel 17:20), the trumpet blast of the Day of Atonement, and the joyful return from exile. Modern reverence too often confuses solemnity with silence; the Psalter teaches us that holy joy is also loud. Sing out, shout, lift the voice.
Audible loud joyful cry; worship has volume.
The Hebrew rua means a loud cry, a shout, a war-cry; ranan emphasizes joyful jubilation. Both appear repeatedly in Psalms as worship-imperatives. "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD" (Ps 95:1; 100:1) is a shout-command. Israel shouted at Jericho; the temple-builders shouted when the foundation was laid; saints shout for joy when YHWH delivers.
Psalm 100:1 — "Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands."
Psalm 5:11 — "But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee."
Ezra 3:11-13 — "And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid."
Reverence-only worship culture has muted the shout; biblical worship makes noise.
Some Christian traditions equate reverence with silence. Scripture knows reverent silence (Hab 2:20) and reverent shouting (Ps 100:1) — both are worship. Israel shouted at Jericho's walls; saints shout when foundations are laid. Worship has volume.
Recover the shout: make a joyful noise. Volume is not the enemy of reverence; both are commanded.
