A Messianic title rooted in the Davidic covenant (2 Sam 7:12-16), in which the Lord promised David an everlasting throne through his offspring. Throughout Matthew's Gospel, the title is applied to Christ — in His genealogy (Matt 1:1), by the blind men begging mercy (Matt 9:27), by the Canaanite woman (Matt 15:22), by the children at the Triumphal Entry (Matt 21:15), and by the Pharisees as a Messianic test in Matthew 22:42.
SON OF DAVID, n.
A scriptural Messianic title; in the New Testament, applied to Christ as the heir of David.
Matthew 1:1 — "The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham."
Matthew 9:27 — "Two blind men followed him, crying, and saying, Thou Son of David, have mercy on us."
Matthew 21:9 — "Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord."
Romans 1:3 — "Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh."
Modern Christianity sometimes detaches Christ from Israel; Son of David ties Him to the covenant.
The title Son of David is heavy with covenantal freight. The Lord swore by Himself to David that one of his sons would sit on the throne forever. Centuries pass; the kings of Judah collapse; the throne is empty for half a millennium; the line is preserved through obscure carpenters and exiles. Then a virgin in Nazareth conceives, and the angel announces: the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David (Luke 1:32).
Modern Christianity sometimes detaches Christ from Israel, treating Him as a pure spiritual figure of universal religion. Son of David refuses the detachment. He is the Jewish Messiah, the heir of a covenant the Lord swore on oath. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; the Son of David is coming back to His own city.
