Summer in Scripture is ripeness and warning. Jeremiah: "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved" (Jer 8:20) — one of Scripture's most poignant lines of missed redemption. Amos saw a basket of summer fruit (qayits) as a pun for "the end" (qets) coming on Israel (Amos 8:1-2). Proverbs: "Whoever gathers in summer is a prudent son" (Prov 10:5). "When you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place" — and then Jesus tells the parable of the fig tree putting out leaves as the sign of summer approaching (Luke 21:29-31).
SUM'MER, n.
SUM'MER, n. [Sax. sumer.] The warmest season of the year, falling between spring and autumn. In Scripture, summer is the season of ripe fruit and approaching harvest — Amos's basket of summer fruit punning on the coming end; Jeremiah's lament that the summer is ended and we are not saved; Jesus' parable of the fig tree whose leaves announce the nearness of summer and of the kingdom.
Jeremiah 8:20 — "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved."
Luke 21:29-31 — "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near."
Proverbs 10:5 — "He who gathers in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps in harvest is a son who brings shame."
Amos 8:1-2 — "This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, a basket of summer fruit. And He said, "Amos, what do you see?" And I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the LORD said to me, "The end has come upon my people Israel.""
"The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved" is one of Scripture's saddest lines. Windows close.
Jeremiah 8:20 is the voice of people who missed their moment. The summer was for harvest; the harvest is past; the opportunity is over. Scripture is insistent that seasons close: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts" (Heb 3:15). Every summer is an invitation to gather. Those who sleep through it stand at summer's end with empty baskets asking why.
