Tongue (Biblical)
/tʌŋ/
noun
Hebrew lashon (לָשׁוֹן); Greek glōssa (γλῶσσα). In Scripture the tongue is a disproportionately powerful small thing — the rudder of life, the fire that sets forests ablaze, the untameable member that reveals the heart.

📖 Biblical Definition

James 3 is the Bible's most sustained treatment: "the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell... no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison" (Jas 3:5-8). The Psalmist: "The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouths of fools pour out folly" (Prov 15:2). The tongue reveals wisdom or folly, sanctification or depravity, with almost no ability to deceive.

📜 Webster 1828 Definition

TONGUE, n.

expand to see more

TONGUE, n. [Sax. tunge.] The fleshy member of the mouth, the chief instrument of speech and of taste. In Scripture, the tongue is the small member that controls the whole life — like the rudder of a great ship or the bit in a horse's mouth — and the instrument by which the heart is most clearly revealed. The sanctification of the tongue is a late and costly work of grace; the unsanctified tongue burns cities to the ground.

📖 Key Scripture

James 3:5-6"So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness."

Proverbs 18:21"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits."

Psalm 34:13"Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit."

Isaiah 50:4"The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Modern platforms have handed every Christian a megaphone. The Bible's warnings about the tongue have multiplied in urgency.

Before social media, the tongue could destroy a village. Now it can destroy reputations, relationships, and churches at scale, in public, permanently archived. James 3:8 — "no human being can tame the tongue" — should be over every keyboard. The cure is not more eloquence but more restraint: less speech, more listening, more prayer before posting. "Be quick to hear, slow to speak" (Jas 1:19). If you cannot restrain your tongue in typing, fast from the platform until you can. The alternative is to set many forests ablaze before you realize what the small match has done.
