The wolf, in Scripture, is the predatory beast and the recurring image of false prophets, heretical teachers, and abusive shepherds who scatter and devour the flock of God. Christ warns: "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves" (Matthew 7:15). Paul tells the Ephesian elders: "after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock" (Acts 20:29). The hireling flees when the wolf comes (John 10:12); the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. Wolves are not always outside the church — Paul says they come in among the flock. Faithful elders are therefore wolf-hunters first, and feeders second. A church that cannot bite cannot protect.
WOLF, n. wulf.
1. A beast of prey of the genus Canis, much resembling a dog in form. Wolves are fierce, cunning, and ravenous; they prowl in the night; they hunt in troops; and their howl is dreadful. 2. Any thing ravenous. 3. Any thing devouring. 4. In the scriptures, a cruel and persecuting man.
Matthew 7:15 — "Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves."
John 10:12 — "The wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep."
Acts 20:29 — "Grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock."
Isaiah 11:6 — "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb."
The modern pulpit renames the wolf “authentic” and sells tickets to the mauling.
Paul warned the Ephesian elders that grievous wolves would enter the flock — and the warning was never louder than today. The celebrity pastor who denies hell, the pop-theologian who weaponizes empathy against Scripture, the podcast prophet who monetizes deconstruction — these are not edgy brothers, they are wolves. Jesus did not call them opinions; He called them predators.
A true shepherd names wolves. A hireling calls them “conversation partners.” The church that cannot tell the difference between a sheep and a wolf will not long have sheep. Christ will restore Isaiah 11:6 in the new earth — but until then, the wolf is still the wolf, and the shepherd must still carry a rod.
Hebrew zeʾeb (H2061); Greek lukos (G3074).
H2061 — zeeb — wolf; predator; Gen 49:27, Jer 5:6, Ezek 22:27
G3074 — lukos — wolf; figurative of false teachers
"The shepherd who will not name the wolf has already sided with the wolf."
"A wolf in sheep's clothing is still a wolf; a sheep is never fooled twice if the shepherd is awake."
"When the hireling flees, the wolf feasts — so God raises men who will not flee."
