Words, in Scripture, are not neutral sounds but accountable utterances. They are weighed by God and stored in the books of judgment. Jesus warns directly: "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned" (Matthew 12:36-37). The word is the overflow of the heart: "Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh" (v. 34). Speech is therefore a moral and eschatological matter — not personal expression alone. "Death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21). Christian men should weigh every word as if standing at the judgment.
WORD — an articulate sound used by common consent as the sign of an idea; a part of speech; a single component of language.
WORD, n. — A single component part of human speech or language. Words are uttered by the voice and may be written. Words are the signs of ideas. They are also, in Scripture, the accountable signs of the heart, for which their speaker shall give answer at the judgment seat of Christ.
Matthew 12:36 — "But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment."
Matthew 12:37 — "For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
Matthew 12:34 — "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks."
Proverbs 18:21 — "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit."
“Just words” is the modern lie; Jesus says every idle one will be answered for.
The world dismisses speech — “they're just words,” “sticks and stones,” “don't take it personally.” Jesus dismisses no word at all. Every idle utterance, every careless joke, every passing gossip is recorded for the day of judgment. By words the believer will be justified or condemned.
The corruption is the trivialization of speech. The cure is the sober recognition that the tongue is the steward of the heart and the heart is answerable to God. Words build empires and burn them; they save souls and damn them; they are never neutral.
