YHWH-Tsabaoth
yah-WEH tseh-vah-OHT
compound divine name
Hebrew Yahweh-Tsabaoth (יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת) — "LORD of Hosts"; tsaba means army or host. Used 285+ times in the OT.

📖 Biblical Definition

YHWH-Tsabaoth (יְהוָה צְבָאוֹת) — "the LORD of hosts," "LORD of armies" — is the most frequent compound divine name in Scripture, appearing nearly three hundred times, especially in the prophets. The hosts are the angelic armies of heaven, the celestial bodies (sun, moon, stars), and the assembled people of God. YHWH commands all three: nothing is outside His command. "The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge" (Psalm 46:7, 11); "Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory" (Psalm 24:10). David explicitly invoked the name against Goliath: "I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied" (1 Samuel 17:45).

The most-frequent compound divine name in the Hebrew Bible — appearing 285+ times. Tsaba means army or host: angelic armies, celestial bodies ("all the host of them"), and the assembled people of God. "The LORD of hosts" names YHWH as commander of every army that exists, visible and invisible. Particular favorite of the prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi).

📖 Key Scripture

Psalm 46:7"The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge."

1 Samuel 17:45"Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts."

Isaiah 6:3"Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory."

⚠️ Modern Corruption

Translations soften to "LORD Almighty" or "LORD of armies" without the cosmic-command force; the militant connotation gets domesticated.

"LORD of hosts" sounds antique; translators often render it "LORD Almighty." The Hebrew is sharper: YHWH commands armies. David walked toward Goliath in His name. Elisha's servant saw the host of YHWH on the mountain (2 Kings 6:17). The cosmic-command image is intentional.

Recover the military edge: when Scripture invokes YHWH-Tsabaoth, it is naming the commander of every army that exists. No force out-numbers Him; no power out-ranks Him.
