λύσις
lýsis
Noun, feminine
Loosing, Release

Definition

Lýsis (λύσις) means loosing, releasing, dissolving. Derived from lyō (to loose). In the NT it refers to release from a commitment, specifically the marriage bond.

Usage & Theological Significance

First Corinthians 7:27: 'Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free? Do not look for a wife.' Paul's counsel reflects eschatological urgency — singleness can allow undistracted devotion. He does not denigrate marriage (Hebrews 13:4 calls it honorable) but places it in eternal perspective. Both marriage and singleness are gifts when lived in consecration to God. What matters is full-hearted devotion to Christ in whatever state one finds oneself.
